High-Frequency, Long-Term Live Imaging
The reason for the difficulty with stem cell research is the inability to visualize fine cellular processes in a dynamic fashion over the long term. The great appeal of the 3D Cell Explorer is in the lack of any phototoxic effects on the cells imaged, as the energy it leaves in the sample is a hundred times less, at about 0.2 nW/µm2, compared to 1nW/µm2 with light sheet microscopes, which are the gold standard in this field.
It also offers a resolution of 195 nm which exceeds that offered by standard confocal microscopy. Thus the 3D Cell Explorer allows even sensitive material to be imaged at high resolution and high frequency, including stem cells.
Also, it allows clear examination of cell organelles as well as tiny or very mobile structures within the cell, including mitochondria, droplets of lipids, filopodia, axons and dendrites, as well as the nucleus and nucleoli, with respect to the specific dynamic processes occurring within them.
Moreover, this unique microscope allows live imaging to be performed at the highest possible speed of image acquisition, of 1 image/1.7 seconds. This is much higher than that achieved by any other microscope, and is a drastically new development in stem cell live imaging.
Another big advantage is the reduction in the cost of making live cell imaging movies, because of the use of advanced holotomographic technology which costs only a fraction of a standard confocal microscope.
