Healthier Blood Pressure - Four Self-Improvement Tactics

September is Blood Pressure Awareness Month and Self-Improvement Month. This article has integrated the two to provide four self-improvement tips that can be implemented to improve blood pressure and thus long-term health.

The majority of people are unaware that hypertension, or high blood pressure, does not have any clear symptoms. Therefore, checking it frequently and discussing any changes with a GP is the most reliable way to understand an individual’s blood pressure.

If hypertension is not treated, it can result in life-threatening complications such as cardiac arrest, stroke, or heart attack. Hence, blood pressure should never be ignored just because one cannot see it.

Anyone can suffer from hypertension. In fact, according to a recent study, millennials (aged between 25 and 34) are the group believed to be most “at risk” of developing high blood pressure. Here, lifestyle plays an important factor in changes to blood pressure, and this is the reason why self-improvement can play a very significant role in remaining as healthy as possible.

The following sections provide four important self-improvement tips that can be immediately incorporated into everyday life to help maintain a healthier blood pressure.

Activity

While there is no need to be a pro-athlete or a long-distance runner, taking regular exercise (20 minutes, 5 times per week) will go a long way in improving weight and fitness—which, in turn, will help lower blood pressure and make the heart healthier.

Diet

Adding the following foods to a diet can help in reducing blood pressure:

  • Green leafy vegetables (try to stick to that magic five a day!)
  • Fresh fruit (especially berries which are high in antioxidants)
  • Foods rich in potassium (bananas are an excellent source of this)
  • Oily fish (two to three times per week)

In addition, it is important to keep salt intake as low as possible—avoid cooking with it or adding more to your meals.

Hydrate

It is important to keep a check on alcohol levels! Alcohol can damage the liver and is also high in calories and sugar, which will have a negative impact on fitness and weight.

Flush out unhealthy toxins from the body by maintaining fluid intake. Keep the body well hydrated by drinking up to 2 L of water per day.

Awareness

Improving awareness and knowing how significant it is to your overall health are very important with respect to maintaining a healthy blood pressure. Even reading this article marks a positive step towards being more health conscious!

It’s important to be familiar with what is regarded as a low and high blood pressure reading. It’s important to check blood pressure frequently, and to encourage family and friends to do the same.

Check blood pressure with a Kinetik Blood Pressure Monitor and enter the reading into the online blood pressure checker to be provided with instant understanding and advice on what the numbers indicate.
