Assays for Research into Caspase Activity

Caspases are proteases, enzymes that assist in protein hydrolysis, which play a key role in apoptosis (cell death). Due to their role in a key cellular process caspase research is an area of intense activity.

Researching the activity of caspases usually involves running a caspase activity assay. In such an assay peptide substrates, or similar, are introduced to caspases in either live cells or cell extract. The rate at which the substrate is processed can be used to determine the level of caspase activity in a sample and, if specific substrates are used, information about the types of caspase present can be determined.
