It is necessary to evaluate changes in the intracellular ion levels in order to understand how signaling occurs within systems of cells as well as functional pathways. Such changes are vital to processes such as muscle contraction, or transmission of nerve signals through synapses. Such ionic fluxes must be regulated to maintain homeostasis, in order to keep such processes normal.

It is therefore vital to measure the concentrations of ions at high temporospatial resolution in many areas of research, including drug discovery and nerve function.
