PBS-only Formulations for Recombinant RabMAb® Antibodies

When recombinant rabbit monoclonal antibodies can be used in BSA and in azide-free formats, it makes antibody-labeling and functional assays simple to perform.

The standard range of RabMAb® antibodies is stored in a solution of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), bovine serum albumin (BSA), glycerol, and sodium azide. BSA and sodium azide are required to keep the antibody stable and to prevent contamination of the antibody. They can also prevent proper conjugation of the antibody to fluorochomes, metals and enzymes.

BSA is a competitive inhibitor of some enzymes or dyes, preventing the binding of the primary antibody to them. This means a significant fall in the efficiency of conjugation.

Sodium azide is sometimes toxic to the cells in an antibody solution. This restricts the usefulness of the antibody solution in cell culture. Furthermore, sodium azide inhibits horseradish peroxidase (HRP) activity, and can prevent antibody conjugation.

Abcam has a range of reformulated recombinant monoclonal antibodies, designed to avoid these issues, as well as easy to use kits that can be employed to eliminate BSA and sodium azide from the solution.

Advantages of PBS-only RabMAb antibodies

RabMAb antibodies with PBS-only format are:

  • Free of BSA, azide and glycerol
  • Selected products contain very low endotoxin levels, confirmed by testing
  • Come in a 100 µg (1 mg/mL) size
  • Are always ready to ship and available in stock
