The program is expected to lead to new ways to identify and cope with one of the most important risk factors for heart disease, particularly in women.

Drinking coffee may help prevent diabetes, report scientists

Scientists are reporting new evidence that drinking coffee may help prevent diabetes and that caffeine may be the ingredient largely responsible for this effect. Bridges to Excellence, a national program that recognizes and rewards physicians for delivering better quality care, today awarded its sought-after Diabetes Care Recognition Program certificate to the 118 physicians in Montefiore Medical Center's 20 outpatient care facilities, known as the Montefiore Medical Group, for substantially lowering blood sugar levels and "bad" cholesterol levels in thousands of adult patients with diabetes.

Worker health checks reveal 50% men at risk of developing diabetes

Over the last one year 100,000 State Government financed worker health check ups have been conducted. The results have been an eye-opener. 800 workers after their check ups have been asked to consult their physicians immediately. These check ups included measurements of blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and waist circumference. The workers were also questioned regarding their eating, drinking and exercising habits.

Lifestyle improvements and new treatments for diabetes and cardiovascular disease needed

Treatment with the anti-hypertensive drug valsartan (Diovan) led to a modest reduction in the development of type 2 diabetes but did not significantly reduce cardiovascular events in patients with impaired glucose tolerance, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center and the University of Oxford. They jointly reported results at the American College of Cardiology meeting today from the world's first study designed to find ways to control the progression to diabetes and cardiovascular disease in people at risk.

White rye flour bread leads to better insulin and blood sugar levels than wheat bread with rye bran

Wholegrain bread is good and good for you, as most people know. But it is not only the fiber-rich bran, the outer shell of the grain, that is healthful. On the contrary, research at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering shows that bread baked with white rye flour, which is flour made from the inner, white part of the rye kernel, leads to better insulin and blood sugar levels compared with wheat bread with rye bran. White rye flour thus leads to much better values than both regular wheat flour and rye bran. At the same time, much of the bread that is sold in stores today in most countries is in fact baked with wheat flour and bran from various grains.
