The link between fish and pregnancy hypertension may start before conception

In a nationwide Japanese cohort of more than 86,000 women, higher fish intake before pregnancy was associated with lower odds of early-onset hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, while fish intake during pregnancy showed different associations with late-onset disease, particularly among women who had not previously given birth. Total dietary omega-3 and omega-6 PUFA intake showed much less consistent associations, suggesting that the relationship with fish consumption may not be explained by total PUFA intake alone.

GLP-1 medications may improve long-term health for people with peripheral artery disease

A US electronic health record study found that adults with obesity who started semaglutide or tirzepatide had lower recorded hazards of anxiety and depression than matched patients using naltrexone-bupropion. A one-year randomized trial found that daily prune supplementation did not improve total or lumbar spine bone mineral density in older men susceptible to, or with, osteopenia. Although some bone turnover biomarkers differed between prune and control groups, these changes did not translate into measurable bone density benefits beyond calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation.

Frailty flags poorer blood pressure control in older women

In 1,038 older adults with hypertension attending outpatient clinics in Vietnam, frailty was more common in women than men, while overall rates of suboptimal blood pressure were similar by sex. Frailty was associated with about twice the odds of suboptimal blood pressure in women, but not in men, highlighting the need to study sex-specific and frailty-informed hypertension care.
