Researchers question wisdom of blocking DP1 in patients prone to cardiovascular disease

Niacin, or vitamin B3, is the one approved drug that elevates "good" cholesterol (high density lipoprotein, HDL) while depressing "bad" cholesterol (low density lipoprotein , LDL), and has thereby attracted much attention from patients and physicians. Niacin keeps fat from breaking down, and so obstructs the availability of LDL building blocks.

Successful aneurysm treatment may not improve quality of life

Patients with unruptured brain aneurysms have significant reductions in several areas of quality of life—especially physical functioning, reports a study in the April issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Elective endovascular aneurysm repair benefits men more than women

A study published in the April issue of Journal of Vascular Surgery reports that women derive less benefit than men from elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA's). The research was done at The Vascular Group, The Institute for Vascular Health and Disease, Albany Medical College, The Center for Vascular Awareness Inc., in Albany, NY.

VasoStitch percutaneous access-and-closure system featured at ACC annual meeting

VasoStitch is developing a percutaneous access-and-closure system for the nonsurgical deployment of large-diameter transcatheter therapeutic devices, such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implants (TAVI) and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) devices. The VasoStitch system is designed to reduce procedural complexity and eliminate the need for an "open" surgical procedure.

Endovascular aneurysm repair associated with lower mortality rates

A burst aneurysm in the abdominal aorta-the largest blood vessel in the body- is a deadly condition. In fact, about half of these patients don't make it to the hospital in time. Those who do more often than not face open surgery to repair the blood vessel. This study finds that a minimally invasive interventional radiology treatment for ruptured aneurysms called endovascular aneurysm repair is safer than open surgical repair and is associated with lower mortality rates, say researchers Society of Interventional Radiology's 37th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, Calif.
