The first lady Mrs. Obama started the Let's Move! Initiative and stated in a press conference "that the goal of the program is to reverse the trend toward childhood obesity in one generation."

National Children's Museum chosen to participate in 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll

The National Children's Museum has been selected for the second consecutive year to participate in the White House Easter Egg Roll, a 132-year-old event designed to encourage children and families to come outdoors and celebrate the start of the spring season. The Museum will present an array of activities and programming related to this year's theme of "Ready, Set, Go!" promoting health and wellness at the White House on Monday, April 5.

Health Affairs: Soda Taxes, Soft Drink Consumption, And Children's Body Mass Index - "Using data on state sales taxes for soda and individual-level data on children," the authors report existing taxes on soda fail to "substantially affect overall levels of soda consumption or obesity rates." However, the authors also found "statistically significant and substantively larger effects of differential soda sales taxes among children who are heavier, have lower family income, are African American, or watch a great deal of TV.

Posting calorie counts on menus and menu boards also needed in Ontario

US President Barack Obama's groundbreaking health care legislation includes a provision requiring restaurants to post calories on menus and menu boards. For the past year, Ontario's doctors have been calling for similar action from the government, chain restaurants and school cafeterias in the province and believe now is the perfect time for this initiative to be implemented.

Actress and philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete has partnered with The Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association on a public service announcement inspiring adults to "lead by example" by making smart food choices their children can emulate. MHAIA's goal is to help reduce the incidence of childhood obesity by encouraging families to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Kaiser Permanente study: Snapshot of the prevalence of extreme obesity in younger children

Extreme obesity is affecting more children at younger ages, with 12 percent of black teenage girls, 11.2 percent of Hispanic teenage boys, 7.3 percent of boys and 5.5 percent of girls now classified as extremely obese, according to a Kaiser Permanente study of 710,949 children and teens that appears online in the Journal of Pediatrics.
