Researchers propose a new look at the role of ferroptosis in cancer development

Professor of Ghent University and Lead Researcher at the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine of the Lobachevsky University Dmitri Krysko together with scientists from Germany, Professor Marcus Conrad and Professor Jose Pedro Friedmann Angeli recently published an article in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer, one of the highest-rated journals that occupies the 2nd line in the oncology section among 223 journals in this category and has an impact factor of 42.78 according to WoS data.

Repurposing drugs to outsmart cancers

In an article published today by SAGE Publishing, investigators from The Nagourney Cancer Institute and The Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, announced a new approach to identifying effective treatments for patients with advanced metastatic cancers. A drug commonly used to treat kidney and liver cancer was discovered effective for breast cancer, which may open new drug therapies to patients regardless of tumor type.

Scientists unravel molecular mechanisms that drive ferroptosis signaling

Ferroptosis is a recently recognized form of regulated necrosis. Up until now, this form of cell death has only been thought to be a possible therapeutic approach to treat tumour cells. Yet, ferroptosis also occurs in non-transformed tissues as demonstrated by this study, thus implicating this cell death pathway in the development of a wide range of pathological conditions. More specifically, the deletion of the ferroptosis-regulating enzyme Gpx4 in a pre-clinical model results in high ferroptosis rates in kidney tubular epithelial cells causing acute renal failure.
