Exactech fourth quarter total revenue increases 7% to $51.8 million

Exactech, Inc., a developer and producer of bone and joint restoration products for hip, knee, extremities, spine and biologic materials, announced today that revenue for 2010 increased 7% to $190.5 million from $177.3 million in 2009. Diluted earnings per share for the year was $0.80 based on net income of $10.5 million.

California researchers receive InHealth grant to evaluate device-intensive procedures

The Institute for Health Technology Studies has awarded a $263,000 grant to a research team at the University of California, Berkeley, to identify and analyze the strategies that hospital systems employ to evaluate and purchase implantable medical devices for cardiac, spinal, and orthopedic procedures.

Tip sheets provide details on hip and knee fracture treatment

Patients who wait more than 36 hours for surgery to correct a hip fracture have a 39 percent rate of medical complication and those who wait 48 hours have a 46 percent complication rate. Patients who receive surgical treatment within 24 hours have a lower complication rate of 25 percent and a shorter hospital stay. Each day the surgery was delayed added an additional two days to hospital stay.

Patients who undergo elective orthopedic surgeries at high-volume, regional hospitals have better surgical outcomes and experience fewer complications than those who undergo those surgeries at local hospitals, according to research being presented by Hospital for Special Surgery investigators at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

First implantation of Amedica/US Spine's Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head performed in hip replacement

Amedica/US Spine, a spine and reconstructive implant and instrument manufacturer focused on unique silicon nitride (SiN) technologies, implanted its first silicon nitride total hip implant this week in the international marketplace. A patient at the George Provincial Hospital in Western Cape South Africa received the implant that uses an Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head as part of the total implant.

San Francisco area patient files DePuy hip replacement recall lawsuit

Wendy R. Fleishman, a partner in the national plaintiffs' law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, announces that Alec MacPhail, of Danville, California, has filed a personal injury lawsuit against DePuy Orthopedics, Inc., and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, Inc., for manufacturing an allegedly defective prosthetic hip implant device sold under the brand name DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System.

MDM X3 is an addition to the company's portfolio of next-generation technologies designed to minimize the risks traditionally associated with hip replacement surgery and address a broader patient population, including both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty candidates.
