Pyromaker can rapidly sequence cancer-driving mutations

Using precise information about an individual's genetic makeup is becoming increasingly routine for developing tailored treatments for breast, lung, colon and other cancers. But techniques used to identify meaningful gene mutations depend on analyzing sequences of both normal and mutant DNA in tumor samples, a process that can yield ambiguous results. Now, a team of Johns Hopkins researchers says it has developed an easy-to-use online computer software application that can clear up any confusion faster and cheaper than other methods currently used to do the job.

Ion Torrent, a unit of Life Technologies Corporation, today announced that it is shipping its new 100 Mb Ion 316 chip, which has tenfold more throughput than the original Ion 314 chip, and that its 1 Gb Ion 318 chip will be available in the fourth quarter.

Ion Torrent extends Ion PGM Sequencer Grant Program to Europe

Ion Torrent today announced that it is extending its Ion PGM Sequencer Grant Program to Europe, and will award two sequencers to scientists there in the second half of 2010. This spring Ion Torrent received hundreds of grant proposals from scientists in North America, and in April two winners were each awarded an Ion PGM sequencer.
