A bone densitometer is a piece of X-ray apparatus used to measure the calcium content of bone to reflect bone density and therefore bone fracture risk. The device generates two X-ray beams and the difference between them in how much energy is passed through the bone is used to determine the extent of bone loss. Bone densitometers are generally available for between USD$5,000 and $40,000.
