Stanford University creates first stem cell science PhD program in U.S.

Stanford University’s Faculty Senate has approved the creation of what officials believe is the first stem cell science PhD program in the nation and, perhaps, the world. The new doctoral program in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine is also the first interdisciplinary doctoral program created by the School of Medicine in recent years.

UMKC School of Medicine receives $1.5 million gift to create Endowed Chair in Pathology

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine is pleased to announce the receipt of a gift commitment of $1.5 million to fund the creation of an Endowed Chair in Pathology. The gift comes from an alumnus of the medical school who wishes to remain anonymous, but wants to express his support for the School of Medicine’s educational mission and the important role the school fulfills in the community.

Misbehaving docs four times likely to be men than women: Study

According to a new study male doctors are four times more likely to be disciplined for misconduct than female doctors. Most common reason for the discipline was sexual misconduct, accounting for 24 per cent of all cases say researchers. Unethical or illegal prescribing accounted for 21 per cent of misconduct cases, while 8 per cent involved death and 9 per cent involved physical harm to the patient. The study is published today in the Medical Journal of Australia.

Abnormal connections created by central nervous system linked to persistence of chronic pain

Chronic pain is an epidemic. One in four Americans suffers from chronic pain due to disease—including cancer and HIV—and the medications used to treat those diseases. One reason for the persistence of chronic pain may be that the patient's central nervous system creates abnormal connections or improves connections that shouldn't be strengthened, explains Susan G. Dorsey, PhD, RN, co-director of the School of Nursing's Center of Excellence in Disorders of Neuroregulatory Function.

Most nurses are chronically sleep deprived

Sleep has become a hot button topic in health care, at least when it comes to physicians. The fact that doctors-in-training don't get enough of it has resulted in regulations governing duty hours in resident training programs across the nation. In 2002, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) reduced the number of hours that resident physicians can work to 80 hours per week.
