Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Report for July 2010

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index dropped slightly to 67.1 in July from June's second-highest score of 67.3 and shows a modest retraction in the nation's well-being rebound, with a fall in four of the six sub-indices comprising the Index. A portion of the overall dip is attributed to the continued decline in the Work Environment.

AVEO achieves enrollment target for tivozanib global Phase 3 clinical trial in advanced renal cell carcinoma

AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that it has achieved its enrollment target for TIVO-1, its global Phase 3 clinical trial for its oral, triple VEGF receptor inhibitor, tivozanib, in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma. In February of this year, AVEO initiated enrollment in TIVO-1, and has successfully reached the target enrollment of 500 patients.

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that emergency visit rates have increased at twice the rate of growth of the U.S. population from 1997 to 2007; Medicaid patients accounted for a large proportion of the increase, often coming with more severe illnesses and complications.

U.S. announces additional $20M in flood aid for Pakistan

The U.S. will give an additional $20 million to aid Pakistan, bringing the total amount of flood assistance to $55 million, Mark Ward, acting director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, told reporters at a press briefing Tuesday, Agence France-Presse reports.

Scientists have published the first report on a new way of preventing potentially harmful plasticizers from migrating from one of the most widely used groups of plastics. The advance could lead to a new generation of polyvinyl chloride plastics that are safer than those now used in packaging, medical tubing, toys, and other products, they say. Their study is in ACS' Macromolecules, a bi-weekly journal.

Researchers suggest Hsp70 can reverse Diabetic peripheral neuropathy

Researchers have been able to use a common chaperone protein, Hsp70, to reverse the loss of function in the nerves of mice with diabetes.Writing in ASN NEURO, Michael J. Urban and colleagues at the University of Kansas suggest that Hsp70 could be used in the future to cure the loss of feeling in the limbs that afflicts many diabetics.
