CDC awards $19.7 million contract to study new drugs for tuberculosis treatment

John L. Johnson, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and pulmonologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center has been awarded a 10 year, $19.7M contract from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an international clinical trials site for the Tuberculosis Trials Consortium (TBTC).

Applied Spine Technologies: Two Stabilimax surgeries performed in South Africa

Applied Spine Technologies announced today the first two Stabilimax surgeries performed outside of the United States. The surgeries were performed in Johannesburg, South Africa, by Ajay Maharaj, MD, at Sunninghill Hospital. The Stabilimax Dynamic Spine System is currently part of an IDE multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial in the U.S.

The National Fragile X Foundation awards $100,000 grant for study of minocycline in FXS children

The National Fragile X Foundation has awarded a translational research seed grant of $100,000 to Dr. Randi J. Hagerman at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute in California for a study of minocycline in the treatment of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Hagerman is an internationally recognized clinician and clinical researcher on FXS, the most common cause of inherited mental impairment.

Prevalence of osteoarthritis continues to rise; OA expenses nearly 100% higher for women than men

Osteoarthritis (OA), a highly prevalent disease, raised aggregate annual medical care expenditures in the U.S. by $185.5 billion according to researchers from Stony Brook University. Insurers footed $149.4 billion of the total medical spend and out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures were $36.1 billion (2007 dollars). Results of the cost analysis study are published in the December issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology.
