GSK, AstraZeneca and University of Manchester create new collaborative centre for inflammation research

The University of Manchester, GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca announce today the creation of the Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research, a unique collaboration to establish a world-leading translational centre for inflammatory diseases. The project starts out with an initial investment of -5M from each partner over a three year period.

Adherence to disease-modifying drugs is low in patients with multiple sclerosis

Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) are injected medications used to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis, and have been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses. But according to a new study led by St. Michael's Hospital and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, adherence to all DMDs is low, with less than half of patients, or 44 per cent, continually adherent after two years.

Dorsogluteal buttock site still most popular despite known potential for sciatic nerve injury

Seven out of ten hospital nurses who took part in a Canadian study used the dorsogluteal (DG) buttock site to administer intramuscular injections - despite the potential risks of sciatic nerve injury - with only 14% using the ventrogluteal (VG) hip site recommended by the nursing literature.

PTSD occurs with significant frequency in civilian patients after traumatic event involving physical injury

Although most commonly associated with military combat, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur in civilians, too - and with consequences that are just as serious, according to a new review article in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS). PTSD is a type of anxiety disorder that occurs after a person experiences a traumatic event involving physical injury, and occurs in 20 to 51 percent of patients with an orthopaedic injury.

Tufts Health Plan now covers SBi's STAR total ankle replacement system

Small Bone Innovations, Inc. (SBi) announced today that effective July 1, 2011, Tufts Health Plan, covering approximately 742,000 members in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, is revising its reimbursement policy to cover SBi's STAR™ total ankle replacement system. Latinas who endure violence at the hands of a partner during or within a year of pregnancy are five times more likely to suffer postpartum depression than women who have not experienced such violence, according to a new study by researchers at the UCLA Center for Culture, Trauma and Mental Health Disparities.

Peripheral venous catheters cause over 10% of catheter-related bloodstream infections

A new study from Rhode Island Hospital has found that more than one in 10 catheter-related bloodstream infections due to Staph aureus in hospitalized adults are caused by infected peripheral venous catheters (PVC). The study points out the substantial medical burden that arises from complications from these infections due to the large number of such catheters used in hospitalized patients.
