AADI receives grant from Tufts Health Plan Foundation to focus on healthy aging for older adults 60+

The Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) at Joslin Diabetes Center has received a $70,089 grant from Tufts Health Plan Foundation to fund Healthy Living for All Seasons, which offers elderly Asians with, or at risk for, diabetes the opportunity to take part in educational workshops and seminars focusing on exercise, improved diet, and the prevention of diabetes complications.

Few newly diagnosed high-cholesterol patients get screened for thyroid dysfunction: Study

Despite current guidelines that recommend newly diagnosed high-cholesterol patients have a TSH blood test done to make sure they do not have hypothyroidism, researchers from Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center have found that only about half of these patients were screened for thyroid dysfunction.

Stanford bariatric program experiences lower hospital readmission rates

The bariatric program at Stanford University saw hospital readmission rates drop by 75 percent and surgical-site infections decline by 60 percent after changes in patient education, discharge planning and pre-operative procedures, according to a new study* presented here at the 30th Annual Meeting for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery during ObesityWeek 2013, the largest international event focused on the basic science, clinical application and prevention and treatment of obesity. Skeletal problems now added to list of diabetes complications

The list of complications from type 2 diabetes is long: vascular and heart disease, eye problems, nerve damage, kidney disease, hearing problems and Alzheimer's disease. Physicians have long thought of osteoporosis as another outcome. Based on a Mayo Clinic study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, that's confirmed: You can definitely add skeletal problems to that list.

Drugs often fail to bring acromegaly under control in routine clinical practice

Over a quarter of UK patients treated for growth hormone-producing tumours do not achieve 'safe' growth hormone levels, according to a 30 year UK multi-centre study of clinical management of the rare disease acromegaly. The findings by the Society for Endocrinology UK Acromegaly Register, published in the November issue of Clinical Endocrinology, show that drugs to control acromegaly often fail to bring the disease completely under control in routine clinical practice.
