The fact that sleep deprivation has an impact on the function of the human immune system is well known. In their latest study, the University of Helsinki research group Sleep Team has now discovered new biological links between sleep loss and the immune system. The results provide at least a partial explanation of why sleep deprivation increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

BUSM researchers capture images of channels that direct proteins to right place in cell membranes

Similar to passengers on an urban transit system, every protein made in the cell has a specific destination and function. Channels in cell membranes help direct these proteins to their appropriate target. Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and their colleagues have now captured images of these channels as they open to allow proteins to pass through a membrane, while the proteins are being made.

Study uncovers new genetic pathways that could revolutionise acute dendritic leukaemia treatment

Acute dendritic leukaemia is a rare type of leukaemia, but one with the worst prognosis-the average patient survival rate is just 12-14 months-that is difficult to treat. Juan Cruz Cigudosa's team, from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre's Molecular Cytogenetics Group, has for the first time sequenced the exome -the coding, or protein-generating, regions of the genome- of dendritic cell leukaemia.

Reporting on a small preliminary study, Johns Hopkins researchers say a simple blood test based on detection of tiny epigenetic alterations may reveal the earliest signs of pancreatic cancer, a disease that is nearly always fatal because it isn't usually discovered until it has spread to other parts of the body.

Scientists reveal first comprehensive genomic analysis of aggressive lymphomas

Mantle cell lymphoma is a very aggressive and difficult to treat cancer originated in blood cells and lymph nodes. To identify the molecular alterations responsible for this tumor, and facilitate the development of new treatments, a team of scientists led by Dr. Xose S. Puente and Dr. Carlos López-Otín, at University of Oviedo, and Dr. Sílvia Beà and Dr. Elias Campo, at IDIBAPS, Hospital Clínic, University of Barcelona, have sequenced the genomes of over 30 of lymphomas.

An investigational new PARP inhibitor, BMN 673, is showing early responses in patients with heavily pretreated, advanced, BRCA-related cancers of the breast and ovary, according to phase I clinical trial results presented here at the AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics, held Oct. 19-23.
