NIA-funded conference findings aim at integrating frailty management into person-centered care

Though it is one of the most frequently used health indicators as more and more of us age, frailty -- the medical term for increased vulnerability to declines in health or a loss of independence -- remains under-studied and under-utilized, so say researchers reporting on a prestigious conference hosted by the American Geriatrics Society and the National Institute on Aging, with support from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and The John A. Hartford Foundation.

In a new research paper published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Thomas E. Finucane, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Geriatrics Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, suggests that prescribing antibiotics for urinary tract infections (or "UTIs") may often be avoided among older adults.

Differences in uptake of toxins, nutritional elements during late pregnancy and early life linked to ASD risk

Using evidence found in baby teeth, researchers from The Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Environmental Health Sciences Laboratory and The Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai found that differences in the uptake of multiple toxic and essential elements over the second and third trimesters and early postnatal periods are associated with the risk of developing autism spectrum disorders (ASD), according to a study published June 1 in the journal Nature Communications.
