Helping to address the issue of medication adherence, persons with opioid dependence who had the medication buprenorphine implanted had less opioid use over 16 weeks, according to a study in the October 13 issue of JAMA.

Retina Implant announces opening of new manufacturing plant in Tübingen-Reutlingen

Retina Implant AG, a leading developer of subretinal implants for the visually impaired, today announced the opening of a new manufacturing plant to meet anticipated demand for their implants. The company's second human clinical trial will be expanding outside of Germany in early 2011 to European countries including the U.K. and Italy and discussions are underway for potential clinical trials in the United States and Asia. Varian and Stanford scientists receive $3.6M NIH grant to develop advanced imaging technology

Scientists from Stanford University and from the Ginzton Technology Center at Varian Medical Systems have jointly received a $3.6 million five-year research grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop advanced imaging technology for improving the quality of CT images for patients with metal objects in their bodies such as hip implants and dental fillings.

Part of brain reorganizes to enhance visual abilities in deaf cats

Deaf or blind people often report enhanced abilities in their remaining senses, but up until now, no one has explained how and why that could be. Researchers at The University of Western Ontario, led by Stephen Lomber of The Centre for Brain and Mind have discovered there is a causal link between enhanced visual abilities and reorganization of the part of the brain that usually handles auditory input in congenitally deaf cats. The findings, published online in Nature Neuroscience, provide insight into the plasticity that may occur in the brains of deaf people.

Cs-131 brachytherapy seed implant can treat metastasized cancer

Paper describes new method for studying bacterial infection of orthopedic implants

A research team, co-headed by Dr. Woo Lee and Dr. Hongjun Wang of Stevens Institute of Technology, has published a paper describing a new method that generates three-dimensional tissue models for studying bacterial infection of orthopedic implants. Dr. Joung-Hyun Lee of Stevens, and Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan of the New Jersey Dental School, are co-authors of the research.
