Genomic analysis of neuroblastoma sheds light on childhood solid tumors

Researchers have used insight from a comprehensive genomic analysis of neuroblastoma to learn about the process driving one of the most common childhood solid tumors. The findings revealed possible approaches for developing precision medicines to improve patient outcomes. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists led the study, which appears today in the journal Nature Communications.

In a clinical trial evaluating a novel immunotherapy option for cancer treatment, a child with rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of muscle cancer, that had spread to the bone marrow, showed no detectable cancer following treatment with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells that were engineered to target the HER2 protein on the surface of the cancer cells.

Suspicious spots on the lungs of children with rhabdomyosarcoma do not behave like metastases

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumor in the muscle tissue of children and adolescents. About 20 children are diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma per year in the Netherlands. "Metastases in these children are often found in the lungs," says professor Hans Merks of the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, who led the study.

The Georgia Esoteric and Molecular Laboratory at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University has been selected as a designated laboratory for the National Cancer Institute's Molecular Analysis for Therapy Choice, or MATCH trial, which is assessing the effectiveness of targeting cancer-causing gene changes rather than cancer type.

UA scientists aim to identify drug targets for rare pediatric cancer

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare cancer of the skeletal muscle that primarily affects pediatric patients. After diagnosis, about 3 out of 4 patients are cured with standard treatment. Survival rates drop to 17 percent if the disease comes back (recurs) and to 30 percent if it spreads (metastasizes).
