FDA grants BioMimetic Therapeutics orphan drug designation for rhPDGF-BB in treatment of OCD

BioMimetic Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has received orphan drug designation from the Food and Drug Administration for its protein therapeutic, recombinant human platelet derived growth factor, to be used in conjunction with autograft and/or commercially available osteochondral allograft for the treatment of osteochondritis dissecans of the knee, elbow or ankle.

BioMimetic Therapeutics reports net loss of $7.7M for second-quarter 2010

BioMimetic Therapeutics, Inc. today reported its financial results as of and for the three and six months ended June 30, 2010. For the three months ended June 30, 2010, the Company reported a net loss of $7.7 million, or $0.35 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $6.3 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, for the same period in 2009. For the six months ended June 30, 2010, the Company reported a net loss of $16.2 million, or $0.73 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $14.3 million, or $0.75 per diluted share, for the same period in 2009.

Fractures are major concern for U.S. high school athletes: Study

The popularity of high school sports in the United States has continued to increase over the past decade, with more than 7.5 million athletes participating in school sports during the 2008-09 academic year. A new study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that 95 percent of fractures required costly diagnostic imaging, including X-rays, MRIs and CT scans, and 16 percent required surgical repair.

In that case, the Court found that parts of the Smith & Nephew RENASYS™ EZ and RENASYS GO Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Systems have infringed the patents EP0853950 and EP0777504 in the United Kingdom. IBM, UPMC partner to provide redesigned SmartRoom solution with service-oriented architecture

IBM and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) are teaming up to bring "smarter" hospital rooms to patients nationwide. Prior to closing, the underwriters exercised their option to purchase an additional approximately 642,000 shares of common stock. As a result, BioMimetic sold a total of approximately 5.64 million shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $8.50 per share.

Athletes who undergo tissue transplant surgery for knee damage can return to sports: Study

Athletes with bone and cartilage knee damage who are treated with transplanted tissue can return to sports after surgery, according to a Hospital for Special Surgery study reported at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, held July 15-18 in Providence, Rhode Island. The study (abstract 8970) overturns the widely held belief that patients who undergo this surgery do not return to athletics.

Hip problems can sideline even the best athletes, but a new study led by orthopedic experts from Rush University Medical Center indicates that the use of minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to treat painful disorders of the hip may give athletes who undergo the procedure another opportunity to resume their sport back at their pre-injury level of competition.

Study shows high rate of return to pre-injury level of function with arthroscopic treatment

Athletes who undergo arthroscopic surgery for a mechanical disorder of the hip have a good chance of being able to return to their sport at a high level of competition, according to a study that will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, held July 15-18 in Providence, R.I. Almost 80 percent of patients were able to return to play after hip arthroscopy at an average of 9.4 months after surgery, and roughly 90 percent were able to return to the same level of competition.
