    Consider what the body is trying to do with the annual cycle. When light levels are low for many daily cycles the body thinks it has to get ready for winter. It will try to accumulate and store as much energy as it can in preparation for famine. With our modern society we expose ourselves to low light all the time so our bodies think they have to take in all the sugar they can and use as little energy as possible. Less pronounced than the bear's hibernation cycle but probably still in effect. Obesity and early exhaustion of the pancreas is the result.
