    In 1972, when I was 17 years old, I underwent a complete colectomy/ileostomy after four (miserable) years living with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis.  What, technically, does the term "gut" reference -- is it the colon alone, or both the small and large intestines?  Second, if the "gut microbiota" resides in the colon, whether exclusively or just primarily, what has research shown regarding the effect on an individual after the removal and, subsequently, the absence of the colon?
