    I have read previously that many studies investigating the effects of alcohol are flawed by the fact that the include in the "abstainers" group, individual who have never consumed alcohol with individuals who have ceased using alcohol.  The abstainers group could therefore include individuals who may have ceased drinking due to negative health consequences.  Having these individuals in the abstainers group raises the likelihood that they will not be as healthy as "moderate drinkers" and my deteriorate more over time that "moderate drinkers".  It would be good to see research that compares lifetime abstainers, ex-heavy users and moderate drinkers.
