I was trained in Family Medicine (Baylor College of Medicine 2002), but b/c uncontrolled circumstances, I was forced to do emergency medicine. Realistically, I did a fairly good job with my FP training, but more acute care-trauma training would have been nice too.

Currently there are programs designed to up the skills of FP's to cover the growing need for emergency services. After my 2 years of practice, I completed a 2-year fellowship in emergency medicine in west Tennessee, the training was good, the rotations challenging and the rewards obvious. I am now board certified in family (AAFP) AND emergency medicine (AAPS) and my performance is just as good as the average residency-trained EP.

I agree with Dr Camargo. The growing need for coverage in the ER's of the country cannot be ignored. Having qualified doctors to fulfill that need is becoming harder and harder. For those GP's or FP's who want to have further training in emergency medicine, there are options available in the form of EM fellowships, and some of these allowing board certification.
