  1. Richard Carlson Richard Carlson United States says:

For a 100 years coffee has been advised against (as a cause of high BP). Than (the large RN study, etc) shows the opposite effect (though, caffeine is a vasoconstrictor & in the short term increases BP). The beauty of coffee is it doesn't require a focused effort (as does controlling other risk factors - such as diet & exercise). It's not a chore, & once hooked on coffee, that caffeine headache gets another cup brewing!

Inconsistencies with respect to coffee studies may relate to how it is made. Older studies have more unfiltered coffee, now most coffee is made using filters that remove oils known to raises LDL levels. Coffee studies use self reports & even retrospective elements; however, coffee drinking is a consistent, somewhat ritualized social behavior (thus easily memorable).  "There are too many factors unaccounted for and association does not prove causality"; however, there are too many studies (in too many diverse lands) showing coffee consumption associations with positive health sequelae for a prudent person to ignore.
