Fluorescing Mantis Shrimp Catching a Fish

While exploring for fluorescence underwater at night in the Bahamas we came upon this mantis shrimp (stomatopod) with bright fluorescence. Mantis shrimp are fearsome predators, with an incredibly refined vision system combined with the fastest strike in the animal kingdom. While shooting the video we lucked out and got a sequence with the mantis shrimp spearing a passing fish and then disappearing into his den.

After the dive trip we collaborated with an international group of scientists to investigate the possible visual significance of the fluorescence, resulting in a publication in the journal Science.
