Incineration is a common technique used for disposing pharmaceutical and pathological waste. Pharmaceuticals are found everywhere – in surface water, ground water, and drinking water – that can be harmful to marine life and may also have a detrimental effect on human health and development.
These factors make incineration the preferred method for disposing pharmaceuticals as opposed to dumping them in landfills or drains.

Medical waste originates from different sources such as clinics, hospitals including field hospitals, dental surgeries, crime scenes, research laboratories, health care establishments, etc. with regulated medical waste being a part of this waste stream.
Regulated medical waste
Regulated medical waste is broadly classified into four groups:
- Biological waste: contaminated with human tissue/blood, animal tissue/blood, toxins, or biological agents
- Chemical waste: contaminated by chemicals and discarded as hazardous waste
- Radioactive waste: contaminated with a radioactive isotope
- Multiple contamination waste: any combination of biological, chemical, and radioactive contamination

Among these groups, some specific waste elements can be incinerated. These include but not limited to:
- Chemotherapy agents, gloves, gowns, aprons, wipes, packaging, ampules, empty vials, empty syringes, IVs, and needles
- Medical PVC including anesthetic bags, IV solution bags, tubing, and oxygen masks
- Hazardous medication including hazardous bulk medication, partially used medication, injectables, pills, and antibiotics
- Laboratory tissues, infectious waste, swabs, body parts, blood products, bandages, gauze, dressings, and contaminated personal protective equipment
All facilities producing medical waste have established procedures. These procedures determine what should be done to the medical waste, and whether a specific item forms a part of the Regulated Medical Waste stream. Such procedures must be strictly followed in order to avoid a high impact on public health.
Mobile medical incinerators
Many items of regulated waste can be efficiently and safely destroyed through incineration. Mobile medical incinerators are developed to very high standards, and they deal with all types of wastes by employing different burning programs. The fact they are mobile allows them to be rapidly deployed to where the waste is.

They make sure that waste is completely destroyed, thereby eliminating any risk of contamination. Such mobile incinerators are particularly suitable for military applications, remote clinics, and field hospitals that deal with disease outbreaks, where they may be required for clean-up operations.
