The Leverhulme Trust funds researchers for understanding the relationship between agricultural production and population health

Pioneering researchers coordinated by the London International Development Centre (LIDC) have won approximately £3.5m to address the global food security crisis by investigating the neglected links between agriculture and health. Their programme, funded by The Leverhulme Trust, bridges traditional disciplines and aims to create a new holistic paradigm for understanding the relationship between agricultural production and population health.

Condoms reduce risk of herpes simplex virus 2

Condom use is associated with a reduced risk of contracting herpes simplex virus 2, according to a report based on pooled analysis of data from previous studies in the July 13 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

New South African government shows commitment to HIV/AIDS, health care, editorial says

The new government of President Jacob Zuma seems to have a clearer-eyed view of the [HIV/AIDS] problem, its remedies and the need to improve the overall health care system" in South Africa, according to a New York Times editorial. "Fixing what's broken will not be easy, but we are encouraged by signs of a commitment to do so," the newspaper writes, pointing to health minister Aaron Motsoaledi's acceptance of last week's Lancet examination of South Africa's health system.

Globe and Mail examines HIV/AIDS rate in India

The Globe and Mail writes that "[w]hen India announced in 2007 that it had 2.3 million people living with HIV, rather than the 5.7 million reported the year before, the government first attributed much of the change to better data collection. Many in the AIDS field were skeptical."

"Twin outbreaks of a flu-like illness and dysentery in a remote region of Papua New Guinea have killed 47 people and infected another 2,000 villagers, a senior medical official said Monday," Agence France-Presse reports. According to provincial health adviser Doctor Theo Likei, the WHO has collected and is testing samples of the virus from the "stricken villages" (8/31). Additionally, the country is experiencing a cholera outbreak - "the first time the disease has officially been confirmed in the country," the BBC reports (Mercer, 8/31).

IDRI signs agreement to use NanoPass' MicronJet microneedle technology for intradermal vaccines

The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) and NanoPass Technologies Ltd. (NanoPass) today announced they have entered into an agreement whereby IDRI licenses NanoPass' proprietary MicronJet microneedle technology for the intradermal delivery of products against a number of diseases including tuberculosis, HIV, malaria, leishmaniasis and leprosy, among others. The financial details of the agreement are confidential.

Pressure on G20 leader to tax financial transactions for aid money intensifies

G20 finance ministers meeting in London next Friday, ahead of a G20 meeting in Pittsburgh, "will face concerted pressure to introduce a tax on financial transactions as a coalition of anti-poverty campaigners aim to force the issue onto the agenda," the Guardian reports.

Also in Global Health news: ARVs in Uganda; Brazil's fight against HIV/AIDS

Zainab Akol, Uganda's AIDS Control Program director, said the health ministry has acquired enough antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to provide treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS until the end of the year, New Vision reports. In addition to 30 tons of drugs, the ministry received at the beginning of August from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, it also purchased ARVs worth about $20 million this month, Akol said (Kagolo, 8/27).

HIV subtype D infected patients more likely to develop dementia

Patients infected with a particular subtype of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are more likely to develop dementia than patients with other subtypes, a study led by Johns Hopkins researchers shows. The finding, reported in the September Clinical Infectious Diseases, is the first to demonstrate that the specific type of HIV has any effect on cognitive impairment, one of the most common complications of uncontrolled HIV infection.

Urine LAM-ELISA's sensitivity of 50.7% in identifying TB disappoints

Urine LAM-ELISA does not appear to be useful as an independent diagnostic test for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). A trial of the new diagnostic, described in the open access journal BMC Infectious Diseases found that it was only capable of identifying 50.7% of TB cases.
