Gates Foundation provides funding for relief efforts in Horn of Africa

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation "on Tuesday announced a $2.5 million grant to Mercy Corps to fund relief and longer-term recovery efforts in drought-stricken Wajir County on Kenya's border with Somalia," representing "more than 40 percent of the $5.4 million in private funds that Mercy Corps has raised to date for Horn of Africa relief efforts," the Seattle Times reports.

One in six mobile phones home for E. coli: Study

The London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine released a study in conjunction with the Queen Mary, University of London which suggests that Britons are not doing a good enough job of washing hands. Experts said the most likely reason for the potentially harmful bacteria festering on so many gadgets was people failing to wash their hands properly with soap after going to the toilet.

Indoor spraying with alternative insecticide reduces malaria transmission in Benin, study says

"Indoor spraying with the insecticide bendiocarb has dramatically decreased malaria transmission in many parts of Benin, new evidence that insecticides remain a potent weapon for fighting malaria in Africa despite the rapid rise of resistance to an entire class of mosquito-killing compounds," researchers from Benin's Entomologic Research Center in Cotonou report in a study published Wednesday in the October edition of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (AJTMH), according to an AJTMH press release.
