A leaked British government report has concluded that 'no infant, child or adult should be exposed to secondhand smoke - secondhand smoke represents a substantial public health hazard'.

Commenting on the results of the report, BMA Chairman, Mr James Johnson, made the following statement:

"It beggars belief that the Health Secretary is still talking about 'possible' health effects of second hand smoke. What other evidence does he need?

"Britain's top medical scientists have now concluded that secondhand smoke is dangerous to children and adults. If John Reid really wants to protect public health he should show leadership and courage by introducing a ban on smoking in enclosed public places without delay.

"It really is appalling that the public has only found out about the results of this report because it was leaked to the Evening Standard. Why didn't the Health Secretary tell Sir David Frost about it yesterday when he was talking about tobacco and health on national television?"
