A course which will train maternity care professionals to deal with emergency situations will be run at the University of Hertfordshire and ALSO next week.

On 28 and 29 July, the University’s School of Midwifery will host a two-day Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) franchise course. It will be aimed at obstetricians, midwives, GPs and other disciplines involved in providing maternity care.

The course consists of a written syllabus, lectures and hands-on procedures using mannequins, culminating with a multiple choice question paper and a practical examination.

It will be run at the University’s Hertfordshire Intensive Care and Emergency Simulation Centre (HICESC), which with its move into the new Health Research Building has become the UK’s largest medical simulation facility.

Sue Carr, Senior Lecturer in the School of Midwifery said: “This is a first for the University of Hertfordshire and we are looking forward to welcoming 40 obstetricians, midwives and GPs to the University over the weekend. The course prepares the individual for dealing with obstetric emergencies thereby improving the care offered to women and their babies.”
