New instrument for OINDP characterization from Malvern Instruments to be showcased at DDL23

Malvern Instruments will showcase the new Morphologi G3-ID particle characterization system at Drug Delivery to the Lungs 23, which takes place from 5 – 7 Dec 2012 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The company will highlight the system’s ability to generate component-specific particle size and shape data that efficiently support the commercialization of both new and generic Orally Inhaled and Nasal Dry Products (OINDPs). Activities at the conference will include a poster presentation that details results from a new study in which the Morphologi G3-ID was used to successfully measure nasal sprays in the formulated liquid state with minimal sample preparation.

The Morphologi G3-ID combines imaging technology with Raman spectroscopy to generate size, shape and chemical identification data from a single platform. In OINDP characterization it complements Malvern’s laser diffraction instruments for rapid particle size measurement – the Mastersizer 3000 and Spraytec – and indeed other techniques such as cascade impaction, by reliably differentiating even morphologically identical particles to generate data for specific formulation components. The Morphologi G3-ID therefore presents an efficient solution for applications such as: foreign contaminant detection; verification of active ingredient particle size pre- and post- delivery for nasal suspensions (in line with regulatory guidance); and detailed investigation of the delivered particle size of dry powder inhaler actives.

The Malvern Instruments poster presentation for DDL 23 is ‘Measuring the particle size of the active components of nasal sprays in the formulated liquid state’. It details a methodology for wet measurement that extends efficient application of the Morphologi G3-ID beyond dry powder characterization. Company experts will be on hand throughout the conference to discuss the work and more generally how Malvern’s analytical instruments work in tandem to support the evolution of OINDP technology.
