On the occasion of the ERS's (European Respiratory Society) annual international seminar, which is held in Amsterdam from 27 to 30 September, Air Liquide Healthcare is launching an innovative and educational information website dedicated to sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea syndrome is a sleeping disorder characterized by repetitive brief interruptions in breathing. These interruptions can last 10 to 60 seconds, or even longer, and can occur several hundred times a night.  Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is the most common form of sleep apnea. It is caused by a temporary obstruction of the upper airways, in the throat, and concerns men and women of all ages. It is estimated that between 1 and 6 % of the global population suffers from moderate to severe OSAS. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome has a direct effect on quality of life and health, and can also lead to serious cardiovascular disorders, like heart attacks and cerebrovascular accidents (CVA).

Although this condition is widespread, around 80 % of people concerned are not aware that they suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. As a key player in treating this disease, Air Liquide Healthcare is committed to informing the general public and promoting dialogue with patients and healthcare professionals.

That is the aim of www.all-about-sleep-apnea.com, which aims to raise awareness and inform the general public about the consequences of this syndrome and how it is treated. Simple and immersive, and aimed at users and patients, this site is organized by the main themes that interest internet users. It contains a variety of sections with written or video testimonials from patients and medical experts. Moreover, in order to follow the latest news, a twitter account has also been created to relay key information (twitter account address: @SleepApneaAbout).

Pascal Vinet, Director of Healthcare Global Operations and member of Air Liquide's Executive Committee, declared: "As an important player in the treatment of sleep apnea, it is our responsibility to inform patients and help them understand their disease better. That is the aim of this new website, which also illustrates Air Liquide Healthcare's commitment to innovation and features new interactive educational tools for the general public and patients."
