Blood sugar concentration, or glucose level, refers to the amount of glucose present in the blood of a human or animal. Normally, in mammals the blood glucose level is maintained at a reference range between about 3.6 and 5.8 mM (mmol/l). It is tightly regulated as a part of metabolic homeostasis.

Continuous glucose monitors show strong survival benefits for type 2 diabetes patients

People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) on basal insulin, starting continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) had a 44% lower risk of dying from any cause after one year compared with those who did not use CGM, with the risk being 35% lower after two years, according to an analysis of patient data being presented at the Annual Meeting of The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, Italy (Sept 28 – Oct 2).

A chemical used in BPA-free products may have a connection to diabetes control

In adults with type 2 diabetes receiving oral glucose-lowering therapy, higher plasma BPS concentrations were associated with higher HbA1c after accounting for demographic factors, medication adherence, and diet, whereas BPA was not associated with HbA1c. The BPS association was modest and no longer statistically significant after further adjustment for BPA, BMI, and physical fitness, supporting the need for larger studies to determine whether reducing exposure could improve glycemic control.

Researchers followed 1,158 adults in Italy for 10 years, comparing those who drank at least two to three cups of coffee daily with those who drank none. They found no statistically significant difference in new cases of impaired fasting glucose or type 2 diabetes, but the small non-consumer group limits how confidently the study can rule out a difference in risk.

Stricter glucose control may affect quality of life in people living with diabetes

New research to be presented at the Annual Meeting of The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, Italy (Sept 28 – Oct 2) shows that, in people living with diabetes (type 1 or 2) using data from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices paired with daily quality-of-life ratings, days with more widely fluctuating glucose readings (while still within safe limits) are followed by days with a better quality life compared to days with more stricter control– suggesting the burden of that stricter control could be preventing those individuals with stricter control from enjoying various activities.
