U.S. Patent and Trademark Office grants patent to Applied Technology Holdings

Applied Technology Holdings, Inc., revealed today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted its patent on a system for the gathering and processing of biometric and biomechanical body motion data.

Jay Shears, CEO of Applied Technology Holdings, Inc., said, "The granted patent relates to low cost motion sensor technology attached to a body, and data storage and retrieval systems to collect body motion and biometric data wirelessly." Shears commented, "Some industries that will immediately benefit from the company's technology are Physical Rehabilitation and Home Patient care through Telemedicine. The healthcare industry is planning for telemedicine and remote collection of patient data for electronic health monitoring, to be used as a tool to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. The Applied Technology Holdings patent relates to technology that is an enabler to achieve those goals." Demand for the MEMS sensors that enable this technology is booming, generating strong growth for players in this segment.

The patent comes at a time when only 9 percent of the nation's hospitals have electronic health records, according to a survey of nearly 3,000 hospitals. The survey, financed by the Federal government and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is the most definitive measure to date of the use of computerized patient records by hospitals.
