College of American Pathologists honours Dr. Kevin B. Dole as the 2009 Pathologist of the Year

Kevin B. Dole, MD, FCAP, was named the 2009 Pathologist of the Year at a ceremony held on October 11, 2009, in Washington DC at CAP '09 -- The Pathologists' Meeting(TM).

Dr. Dole received the award, the College of American Pathologists' highest honor, in recognition of his strong leadership of the Council on Membership and Professional Development (CMPD) over the years in addition to his significant contributions to the College and the specialty of pathology over more than two decades. Dr. Dole helped establish the College as THE Pathologists Organization by increasing member market share of both Junior Members and Fellows to record levels.

"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by my peers and colleagues with the Pathologist of the Year Award," said Dr. Dole. "Through my service over the years, I have had the privilege to represent the College and the profession."

Dr. Dole has held numerous leadership positions within the College, having served as a member of the CAP Board of Governors and as chair of the Government Affairs Committee, the Ad Hoc Inquiry Committee and the Council on Membership and Professional Development. He has also served as vice chair on the Compensation Committee, the Council on Public Affairs, and the Government Affairs Committee. In addition, Dr. Dole has served as a laboratory inspector for three decades.

Dr. Dole is currently the medical director at Caritas Medical Laboratories and the director of Pathology and Laboratory at Carney Hospital, both in Boston, Mass. He is also the laboratory director at Dedham Medical Associates in Dedham, Mass. and serves as a laboratory inspector for the College of American Pathologists. Previously, he was the chief pathologist at Glover Memorial Hospital (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) in Needham, Mass. and was also president of the Glover Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. Academically, Dr. Dole is an associate clinical professor of pathology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He is also a trustee at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Mass., Martha's Vineyard Hospital, and Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, both in Oak Bluffs, Mass.

Dr. Dole earned his BS magna cum laude from Boston College before completing his MD at Tufts University School of Medicine. Before completing a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a residency in Clinical Pathology at New England Medical Center in Boston, Dr. Dole was an intern in medicine there. Dr. Dole is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
