The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is kicking off a one-year celebration of its 20th anniversary with the publication of its first-ever eight-page full-color newsletter looking back on the past 20 years, recapping 2009 and gazing into the organization’s future. Komen Greater NYC has been named # 1 Komen for the Cure Affiliate — among 120 Affiliates worldwide — for its fundraising and financial support of community breast health organizations serving underserved and uninsured women and their families.

“It’s a major accomplishment, made even more significant as we face the dual challenges associated with the present difficult economic climate combined with meeting the increasing needs of our community.”

“Komen Greater NYC is proud to have achieved the milestone of 20 years of service,” said Dara Richardson-Heron, MD, Komen Greater NYC CEO. “It’s a major accomplishment, made even more significant as we face the dual challenges associated with the present difficult economic climate combined with meeting the increasing needs of our community.”

The newsletter will be distributed to more than 55,000 people in New York City, Westchester and Rockland Counties, on Long Island and throughout the metropolitan area.

“I wasn’t yet personally touched by breast cancer in 1991 when Komen Greater NYC was founded and I started my career at J.P. Morgan,” said Blythe Masters, Komen Greater NYC Board Chair and Head of J.P. Morgan Global Commodities. “But in 2002 my mother was diagnosed with the disease and everything changed. I am proud of my involvement with Komen and pleased to say that JPMorgan Chase is still the top corporate fundraiser for the Komen New York City Race for the Cure® as it has been for the past seven years.”

The newsletter includes:

  • An Affiliate history and wrap up of achievements over the past 20 years.
  • A column marking the 20th anniversary and discussing future plans by CEO Dara Richardson-Heron, MD.
  • A column “20 Years in the Fight to End Breast Cancer Forever” by Board Chair Blythe Masters.
  • “An Event-Full Year,” highlighting 2009 Komen Greater NYC events in words and pictures.
  • A Calendar of 2010 events and celebrations.
