Profile America - Friday, March 26th, noting Women's History Month.  Today marks the birthday of one of the nation's most distinguished nurses - Jane Delano.  She began her career treating patients suffering from yellow fever and typhoid epidemics.  Her exceptional executive and organizational skills led her to become superintendent of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, as well as president of the American Nurses Association.  She brought together several organizations to form Red Cross nursing, with the result that 8,000 trained nurses were ready when the U.S. entered World War I.  Jane Delano is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.  In the U.S. today, there are 2.8 million registered nurses, 92 percent of them women.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, counting down to census day April 1st.
