3M Health Information Systems, an international leader in ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding and clinical terminology management, has released the 3M ICD-10 Code Translation Tool, now fully integrated with 3M's medical vocabulary server, the 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary, to provide a single source solution for translating and converting ICD-9 based applications to ICD-10. Building on 3M's real-world operational experience in terminologies and standards implementation, and nearly two decades of developing and implementing ICD-10 products and services around the world, the new integrated solution helps U.S. hospitals, physician practices, payers and government agencies successfully transition to ICD-10.

“Integrating these two applications helps organizations take immediate action to convert information systems, update processes, and prepare for ICD-10 implementation”

The combined power of the two applications makes it possible to create and store customized ICD-9 and ICD-10 mappings, and leverages the industry-standard vocabularies of the 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary to provide coded, computable data that people can understand and software applications can use and process in real-time.

"Integrating these two applications helps organizations take immediate action to convert information systems, update processes, and prepare for ICD-10 implementation," said Ray Terrill, senior vice president for 3M Health Information Systems. "Beginning the transition process now allows facilities to take strategic advantage of ICD-10's potential for in-depth analysis of disease patterns and treatment outcomes, streamlined and accurate reimbursement, and overall healthcare quality improvement efforts."

The 3M ICD-10 Code Translation Tool helps convert ICD-9 based applications to ICD-10. Offering easy-to-use menu-driven features that simplify the translation process, the software can be used to convert existing information systems and software applications to ICD-10, or to create customized mappings for specific clinical and business needs.

The 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary (HDD) is a controlled medical vocabulary server that has been continuously expanded and maintained for over 15 years. It combines industry experience with professional and academic expertise to create a practical implementation of informatics principles and industry-standard vocabularies, such as ICD-9, ICD-10, ICD-10 General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs), SNOMED CT® and more. The 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary provides a road map to the content and structure of patient data by defining and translating every data element and healthcare concept that occurs in a computerized patient record.

The new ICD-10 national coding standard is scheduled to be implemented on October 1, 2013 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Center for Health Statistics, 3M developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS), the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS) and Reimbursement Maps.
