ALFA sponsors short films competition about ageism in America

The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), representing senior living providers and the seniors and families they serve, is sponsoring a short films competition about ageism in America. Ageism includes discriminatory and prejudicial practices, attitudes and stereotypes perpetuated particularly against seniors.

"Through this film competition, ALFA is leading an important conversation about the negative impact of ageism on seniors in America," said Rick Grimes, president and CEO of ALFA. Most older adults are cognitively and physically active well into their 80's and 90's with a great deal to contribute. However, societal norms often marginalize older adults, and apply paternalistic attitudes and mean spirited stereotypes to a group of people who deserve our respect."

Film makers, film students and others interested in cinematography are invited to produce and submit a short film of no more than nine minutes in length to ALFA that will educate the public about ageism. The winning films will be awarded cash prizes of up to $10,000 and will be screened during the ALFA Annual Conference & Expo, April 5-7, 2011 in Orlando, Florida. Submissions will be accepted until February 1, 2011. For more information and ALFA points of contact, please visit www.alfa.org/film.
