U.S. aid efforts in Pakistan have become "muddled" and should be delayed until reforms are implemented, a report (.pdf) compiled by a Center for Global Development (CGD) task force, said on Wednesday, Agence France-Presse reports (Tandon, 6/1).
The report "calls for major changes in Washington's approach to development assistance to the South Asian country, beginning with its separation from Washington's development efforts in neighbouring Afghanistan and from its military and security assistance programme in Pakistan itself," Inter Press Service writes (Lobe, 6/1). According to the report, there is "too much emphasis on how much money is being spent, rather than its impact," CNN writes (6/1). The study comes as Congress questions aid to Pakistan, which totals about $18 billion since the September 11, 2001, attacks, AFP reports (6/1). CNN interviewed CGD President Nancy Birdsall regarding the report (Lister, 6/1).
