Psychology graduate students face gap in training opportunities

The New York Times reports on a lack of internships available to students graduating in clinical psychology.

They call it "the match." Every year, thousands of graduate students in clinical psychology pick the hospitals and clinics where they would like to do yearlong internships. ... Last year, 937 students, or 24 percent of those who applied, were not accepted by any of the sites they had chosen -; and students must complete internships to earn their degrees and venture out into the workplace. ... Students who do not match must hunt for unaccredited internships, positions that can hobble their careers. Almost half end up without an internship at all and must try again the next year (Berger, 11/7).

But on a different subject, a key administration official sees potential in health careers.

Speaking via video conference to a room filled with nursing students health care providers and educators in Santa Maria, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said Monday that despite the economic downturn, health care is a growing field that provides a wealth of job opportunities. Sebelius spoke during a roundtable discussion hosted by Congresswoman Lois Capps. ... Between 2008 and 2018, health care is projected to add 3.2 million new jobs, more than any other industry, according to Capps, and the health care sector has accounted for one third of private sector job growth over the last three months (11/8).
