Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) announced today that 20 of the Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities, as recognized by Health Imaging & IT magazine, use radiology solutions from Nuance. In addition to this distinguished group, leading healthcare organizations, including Mercy Health Partners, Memorial Health, Ohio State University Medical Center, Sutter Health, University of New Mexico Hospital, UPMC and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have partnered with Nuance to drive significant improvement across their radiology workflow.

“We introduced PowerScribe | 360 Reporting as part of our radiology workflow in July. Our goals were to improve the quality of radiology reports, speed the time it takes to finalize reports and reduce the cost of medical transcription”

"We introduced PowerScribe | 360 Reporting as part of our radiology workflow in July. Our goals were to improve the quality of radiology reports, speed the time it takes to finalize reports and reduce the cost of medical transcription," said Richard D. White, M.D., Chairman, Department of Radiology, The Ohio State University Medical Center. "Within one week of converting to voice recognition, all of our radiologists were up and running on the PowerScribe solution and, today, the turnaround time of our reports is faster than we ever expected. Because of our use of PowerScribe, our reports are structured and better received by the clinicians, capable of being mined for data in an efficient way, and within the year we expect to save nearly one million dollars on transcription."

Later this month, Nuance will unveil several much anticipated upgrades to its radiology reporting and communications platform PowerScribe | 360 Reporting at the RSNA 2011 97th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. Nuance continues to design and introduce solution features and functionality to meet the needs of its radiology customers, which today account for more than one-third of all radiologists in the United States. New updates to PowerScribe | 360 Reporting will include:

  • New Mobile App for Radiologists - With the PowerScribe | 360 Mobile App, radiologists will be able to access radiology reports from the iPhone, enabling quick review and easy sign-off on reports without returning to a workstation. With the mobile app, radiologists will also be able to dictate a search query and within seconds receive results from a variety of sources such as Google, AuntMinnie.com, CHORUS, Medpix, PubMed and Yottalook. Extending speech recognition to the mobile radiology workflow will speed and simplify radiologists' ability to finalize reports and access clinically relevant information. The PowerScribe | 360 Mobile App will be offered for purchase as an add-on to the PowerScribe | 360 Reporting solution.
  • New Partnerships for Streamlined Data Sharing - Leaders in the field of radiology, including Imorgon, MEDRAD, Siemens, Sonultra and TeraRecon, have partnered with Nuance to add value to the quality of radiology reports created within PowerScribe | 360 Reporting. Now, modality generated measurements, such as those from an ultrasound, can be automatically added to radiology reports, eliminating the need for radiologists to re-enter data via manual typing or dictation. This additional information results in more comprehensive and accurate radiology reports that contribute to improved patient safety and care.
  • Core PowerScribe | 360 Reporting Platform Enhancements - Building on its unmatched speech recognition accuracy and extensive productivity, communication and administration features, Nuance will showcase new PowerScribe | 360 Reporting features to further optimize the multifaceted radiology workflow. Among these new advancements, Nuance will demonstrate customizable Peer Review capabilities and enhanced critical test result management (CTRM) automation.

Alongside portfolio advancements and an expanding customer base, Nuance continues to grow and deepen its strategic partnerships across the radiology industry. Today, Nuance is partnering with leading Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archival and Communications System (PACS) vendors to ensure tight integration and seamless workflow during the data capture and sharing process. Nuance's partners include, but are not limited to, Calgary Scientific Inc., Cerner, Fuji, Imorgon, Mammography Reporting System, McKesson, MEDRAD, Merge Healthcare, Montage, Siemens and Sonultra. Each vendor will demonstrate Nuance's radiology reporting solutions at its RSNA booth.

"Year after year, the RSNA conference brings together nearly 60,000 radiology professionals and enthusiasts who are committed to driving improvement to the operational aspects and most importantly to the patient care aspects of radiology," said Janet Dillione, executive vice president, general manager, Nuance Healthcare. "Within the diagnostic space, Nuance's focus has been on delivering speech-driven solutions that drive efficiency across the radiologist workflow. While reporting is one piece of what we help our customers do, it's one of many. This year we're unveiling a handful of upgrades to our closed-loop radiology portfolio, introducing a new mobile app and expanding the depth and breadth of our work with partners in the space."

Nuance's full suite of radiology solutions: PowerScribe | 360 Reporting, PowerScribe | 360 Critical Results, PowerScribe | 360 Analytics, PowerScribe | 360 Decision Support and SpeechMagic will be available for demonstration at booth #2816 at RSNA 2011 in Chicago, November 27 - December 1.
