House Energy and Commerce Committee gives nod to CLASS Act repeal bill

The panel approved the measure by a 33-17 vote.

House Republicans inched closer to their goal of eliminating the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Program, or CLASS Act, on Wednesday when the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a bill to repeal the long-term care program established in last year's healthcare reform law. In a 33-17 vote, committee members approved legislation that would ensure the contentious program-;which HHS discontinued on Oct. 14-;does not resurface (Zigmond, 11/30).

The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 33-17 to repeal the healthcare reform law's long-term care CLASS Act on Wednesday, setting up a possible vote by the full House by year's end. Democrats stayed largely united in support of the program, which the Obama administration has put on hold because it says it can't find a way to make it solvent. Only three Democrats - Reps. Jim Matheson (Utah), Mike Ross (Ark.) and John Barrow (Ga.) - voted to repeal the program; all three had voted against the healthcare reform law last year (Pecquet, 11/30).
