The engineering consultancies Sweco and ÅF have signed a joint contract with Skanska Healthcare AB for planning and design of the New Karolinska Hospital in Solna, NKS. The contract is worth approximately EUR 65 million and will be divided equally in the consortium between Sweco and ÅF. Around EUR 28 million of the contract value has been earned to date.

"This is a large and very important contract for Sweco. Planning and design of NKS will involve several of our disciplines and above all our cutting-edge expertise in the healthcare sector. At most we will have around 150 consultants from Sweco working on the project at the same time," says Åsa Bergman, President of Sweco Sweden.

Sweco's services include project management and engineering design of technical installations, logistics, environmental aspects and infrastructure. Sweco's assignment will run until December 2014.

Sweco has been active in the NKS project together with Skanska and ÅF for several years, but the collaboration has now been formalised and extended.

Sweco has longstanding experience of major healthcare projects both in Sweden and internationally. The company is currently working on Angered's new local hospital, Linköping University Hospital and Västfastigheter in Gothenburg, to name a few. About the New Karolinska Solna NKS will be a whole new state-of-the-art university hospital that will provide highly specialised and specialised healthcare in close collaboration with research and education on a large scale and with the highest quality. The new hospital is scheduled to open for the first patient in 2016 and to be fully completed in 2017. The hospital will have a total built area of around 320,000 square meters.
