RxAlly, a first-of-its-kind alliance of more than 22,000 pharmacies nationwide, announces today the publication of a white paper entitled Personalized Pharmacist Care: Healing America's Post-Reform Health Care System. The white paper highlights an unprecedented solution for improving patient health, reducing costs, and seeks public engagement to avert strains on the health care system.

Personalized Pharmacist Care refers to a range of individually-tailored, pharmacist-provided clinical and consultative services to improve patient quality of life and optimize clinical and economic outcomes. Personalized Pharmacist Care leverages the extensive clinical education, training, and medication expertise of the pharmacist and combines that with face-to-face interaction between the pharmacist and the patient.

"We are excited to release our vision of a nationwide care delivery model – Personalized Pharmacist Care – that seeks to transform an outdated and ineffective paradigm into one that can benefit all Americans," said Bruce Roberts , CEO of RxAlly. "The expertise of the pharmacist – which is largely absent elsewhere along the care continuum – is perfectly suited to address the increasing complexities related to medication use, chronic disease prevalence, and access to care issues."

Given the uncertain state of the United States health care delivery system, the white paper addresses concerns and proposes a solution to the challenges raised by:

  • The prevalence of chronic diseases
  • Increased demand for patient care
  • Non-adherence and the growing complexities associated with medications

Personalized Pharmacist Care is a care delivery model proven to improve patient health outcomes, enhance productivity and lower overall health care costs for all the audiences it serves, whether patient, payer or provider.  A 2011 report to the U.S. Surgeon General which analyzed 298 separate research studies conclusively demonstrated that integrating pharmacists into the patient care process promotes greater levels of patient engagement.  It also concluded that for every dollar spent on clinical pharmacy services, the overall average economic benefit gained was $10.

The effectiveness of Personalized Pharmacist Care is demonstrated through additional case studies in the white paper, including The Asheville Project. This initiative offered personalized, face-to-face medication counseling to patients and over time, studies showed an improvement in outcomes, enhanced productivity, and reduced costs.  Another study, conducted by RxAlly member Thrifty White, found that patients were 3.4 to 6.1 times more likely to be adherent to prescription medications if they were enrolled with medication synchronization with their pharmacist.
