The editors of the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (JSCM) and the leadership of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP) have announced the winner of this year's This prestigious award acknowledges the best research article by a young investigator during the calendar year. Miriam Hwang, MD, PhD was selected for her article, "Longitudinal changes in medical complications in adults with pediatric spinal cord injury." (JSCM 2014;37(2):171-178; DOI 10.1179/2045772313Y.0000000150).
Dr. Hwang is a postdoctoral fellow at Marquette University and Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago. Her fellowship is funded by an Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training (ARRT) grant from the National Institute on Disability & Rehabilitation Research (H133P100008). JSCM is the peer-reviewed official journal of ASCIP.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Hwang to the ranks of Bors Award honorees," said Donald Bodner, MD, editor of JSCM. "We anticipate that this is just the first acknowledgment of her dedication to spinal cord injury care and research." As this year's Bors Award honoree, Dr. Hwang will be acknowledged at ASCIP's 2014 Educational Conference, which will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch, from August 31 to September 3, 2014. Dr. Hwang will present her paper at this Conference, and accept her award at the Conference awards ceremony.
Shriners Hospitals for Children- is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay.
